Creating and using an effective Business Case
Audience
Project and Programme Sponsors / SROs, Steering Group members, Key Stakeholders, Business Change Managers, Benefits Managers, Project and Programme Managers, Team members, Financial managers and PMO staff.
Background
Although the majority of programmes and projects create a Business Case to justify the investment, many never revisit it to ensure that continued investment makes sense. In addition, some initiatives are justified as “we have no choice”, especially in regulatory environments. Unless the project is still viable, it should be stopped (or re-shaped), but this can be a difficult decision to make, especially if the expected benefits are not well defined.
This course explores what makes a good and a bad Business Case, and provides pragmatic techniques for developing effective Business Cases and using them to confirm the continued viability of the project or programme.
Objectives
On completion, delegates will understand how to:
- Create a justifiable Business Case
- Engage key stakeholders in the Business Case
- Ensure continued ownership of the Business Case
- Describe the relationship between the Business Case and the realisation of benefits
- Explain the role of a Business Case in regulatory projects
- Use a Business Case throughout a project or programme
- Explain how to use a Business Case at viability reviews, and how to manage “stop” decisions
- Begin applying the techniques on real projects and programmes
