Effective governance and control for Steering Groups

Audience

Steering Group members, Programme and Project Board members,  Senior Responsible Owners, key stakeholders, programme managers and project executives

Background

The role of the Steering Group is fundamental to ensuring the success of any change initiative, and is responsible for ensuring that the initiative is both in control and in governance.  However, members are often not well equipped to fulfil this important role, and may not understand the responsibilities it brings.

Effective governance will ensure that the Steering Group can react early to potential risks to the change initiative and provide incisive direction to keep it on track. For example, if the initiative is no longer viable it should be stopped or re-shaped, but without good governance it will be very difficult to justify this decision.

This workshop explains the role of the Steering Group (including Project and Programme Boards) and provides a number of practical techniques for ensuring it can make timely decisions through good governance and control.

Objectives

On completion, delegates will understand how to:

  • Agree appropriate membership of a Steering Group
  • Define a suitable governance strategy and procedures for the change initiative
  • Establish effective controls for the change initiative
  • Agree key reporting criteria
